Super Incuse Maple Leaf coins
Most precious metal investors that buy coins regard the coin design as a secondary feature. After all, when you buy silver bullion coins for the purpose of investment, it is the premium that you will have to pay above the spot price of the metal that will interest you most of all. However, collectible precious metal coins have no trouble finding buyers these days and usually sell out their limited mintages very quickly. Canada’s esteemed Royal Canadian Mint has just issued the 2022 edition of super incuse Maple Leaf coins. These new collectible silver proof coins will be available for purchase online soon.
The characteristic of all incuse coins is that they have their central design sunk below the coin’s surface. So what are super incuse Maple Leaf coins? This new type of collectible Silver Maple Leaf coin was issued by the Royal Canadian Mint for the first time in 2021 in two different versions, a 1 oz version and a 1 kg version. These 1 oz and 1 kg super incuse coins could only be produced thanks to new coin minting technology that was developed by the mint’s own Research and Development team.
The central maple leaf design on the 1 oz super incuse Maple Leaf coins is sunk 1.5 mm below the coin’s surface and on the 1 kg coins that were only minted in 2021 (mintage of 450 coins), it was even incused to a depth of 4.5 mm. On previously issued incused coins, the central design was only incused to a depth of 0.3mm. In a nutshell, that is the difference between the Royal Canadian Mint’s ‘normal’ incused coins and the super incuse coins that were first issued in 2021.

Which differences are there between the 2021 and current 2022 silver edition of the RCM’s 1 oz super incuse Maple Leaf coins? The inaugural 2021 edition of these coins featured a special privy mark on the reverse side that was meant to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the maple tree as the official arboreal emblem of Canada. No such privy mark appears on the reverse of the current 2022 edition of the coins which instead feature selective rose gold plating as well as a background field pattern of many small maple leaves.
Furthermore, the annual mintage of the 1 oz silver version of the super incuse Maple Leaf coins increased from 6,000 coins in 2021 to 7,000 coins in 2022. In both years, the 1 oz coins that measure 36 mm in diameter and have a face value of CAD $ 20 were minted with a modified reverse proof finish out of 99.99% pure silver.
Collectible Silver Maple Leaf proof coins with an incused central design on both sides (double-incuse) were issued from 2018 to 2020 in the two denominations of 1 oz and 3 oz. The mintage of the 99.99% pure 1 oz double-incuse coins that have an official face value of CAD $ 20 was limited to 6,500 coins in 2018 and 5,000 coins in 2019 and 2020. The 2018 and 2019 double-incuse Silver Maple Leafs were issued with a reverse proof finish and edge lettering. Furthermore, the 2019 edition featured selective gold plating. The final issue of double-incuse Silver Maple Leaf coins in 2020 was plated with black rhodium and had a matte proof finish.
In addition to the 1 oz double-incuse Silver Maple Leaf coins, the Royal Canadian Mint also issued double-incuse 3 oz Silver Maple Leaf coins in 2018 (3,000 coins), 2019 (2,000 coins) and 2020 (2,000 coins).
