China’s Polar Exploration 40th Anniversary Coins
Most coin collectors are already familiar with the Chinese Gold Pandas and Silver Pandas. But unbeknownst to most people, the rising Asian nation issues further commemorative precious metal coins from time to time as well. On April 17th, the People’s Bank of China issued a stunning tribute to China’s first polar scientific expedition with the release of the 100 Yuan gold coin and the 10 Yuan silver coin. These coins mark the 40th anniversary of this historic expedition, celebrating China’s achievements in polar exploration and scientific advancement. Let’s delve into the significance of these coins and the story they represent.
The 100 Yuan gold coin features a captivating design that encapsulates the spirit of exploration and discovery. The obverse side that was designed by the graphic artist He Chun shows quite a number of things: a family of penguins at the lower left, the Antarctic Research Icebreaker ship “Xue Long – Snow Dragon”, a partial outline of a map of Antarctica that marks the locations of China’s five Antarctic research stations as well as a polar fixed-wing aircraft in the air above the icebreaker ship.
In parallel, the 10 Yuan silver coin that was designed by the graphic artist Li Zhenkai depicts the Xuelong 2 polar research ship that has been sailing in the Arctic Sea. A polar research team can be seen at work retrieving an ice core sample in front of the ship and a polar bear with its two cubs appear in the background on the left. The top area of the coin has been colorized in blue which is meant to represent the aurora borealis northern lights. A partial Arctic map with two dots that are meant to represent China’s Arctic research stations can be seen as well.
The National Emblem of the People’s Republic of China is depicted on the reverse side of both the silver and gold version of the China’s Polar Exploration 40th anniversary coins.
These coins not only serve as exquisite collectibles but also carry profound historical and cultural significance. They honor the dedication of scientists, explorers, and researchers who have contributed to China’s achievements in polar exploration, advancing our understanding of these critical regions and their impact on global climate and biodiversity.
The issuance of these coins by the People’s Bank of China reflects the nation’s commitment to promoting scientific endeavors and preserving the natural heritage of polar environments. It also underscores China’s growing presence and leadership in international scientific cooperation, fostering collaboration in areas of mutual interest and shared responsibility, such as climate change research and environmental conservation.
Numismatists, collectors, and enthusiasts alike are drawn to these coins not only for their exquisite craftsmanship but also for the stories they tell and the historical milestones they commemorate. As China continues to make strides in scientific innovation and exploration, these coins stand as tangible reminders of the remarkable achievements and aspirations that drive humanity’s quest for knowledge and discovery.
In conclusion, the 100 Yuan gold coin and the 10 Yuan silver coin issued by the People’s Bank of China in honor of the 40th anniversary of China’s first polar scientific expedition are not just pieces of precious metal; they are symbols of exploration, discovery, and the enduring spirit of human curiosity that transcends borders and inspires us to reach new horizons.
