Croatian Gold Coins
In 2023, the Croatian National Bank, in collaboration with the Croatian Mint, released three gold commemorative coins celebrating the country’s rich lace-making tradition. This release highlights the cultural heritage of lace-making from the regions of Pag, Lepoglava, and Hvar, which are recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The coins come in three denominations: €100, €25, and €10, each with a distinct weight and size but sharing a unified design. The €100 coin, weighing 1 ounce (31.103 grams), the €25 coin, weighing 1/4 ounce (7.78 grams), and the €10 coin, weighing 1/16 ounce (1.94 grams), are all made of 99.99% pure gold. The coins were designed by academic sculptor Stjepan Divković, who beautifully captured the intricate lace patterns from the three lace-making centers.
The obverse of the coins features lace that combines traditional patterns from Pag, Lepoglava, and Hvar. The inscription reads “čIPKARSTVO O HRVATSKOJ” (Lace from Croatia), highlighting the national significance of this craft. The reverse showcases the motif of St. Mary’s lace, notable for its construction from a single unbroken thread, symbolizing the unity and continuity of Croatian cultural heritage.

Lace-making in Pag dates back to the 15th century when Benedictine nuns traded their lace in the markets of Venice and Vienna. This craft was revived in 1906 when a lace-making school was established in Pag to provide additional income for the families of local fishermen. Lepoglava, on the mainland, also became renowned for its lace-making around the same time. The lace from Lepoglava, created using bobbins, gained international recognition, winning numerous awards, including a gold medal at the 1937 Paris Exposition.
Hvar’s lace-making tradition, centered in the Benedictine convent, is unique due to the use of fine threads extracted from agave leaves instead of yarn. This distinctive method of lace production, along with the techniques from Pag and Lepoglava, continues to be passed down through generations, ensuring the survival of this beautiful art form.
Each coin comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by the governor of the Croatian National Bank, packaged in a gift box, making them not only a collector’s item but also a perfect gift.
